Starting this school year, all Illinois K – 12 public schools are required to share information about IL ABLE accounts with parents and guardians of all students who have Section 504 plan.

July is Disability Pride Month, a time to celebrate the history, achievements, and diversity of people with disabilities. The month also recognizes the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA, which was signed into law on July 26, 1990.

The Chicago Abilities Expo comes to town June 12-14, 2026, at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center in Schaumburg, IL.

Millions More Now ABLE-Eligible

Get Ready for ABLE Age Adjustment
On January 1, 2026, the age-of-disability-onset criteria for owning an IL ABLE Account will expand to include people who acquired their disability before age 46. (The current criteria are disability onset before age 26.) Approximately 250,000 more Illinoisans will become eligible to own a tax-advantaged IL ABLE Account to start saving and investing for disability-related expenses.
Parents of a child with a disability are thinking ahead.
Alysia Townsend, parent of IL ABLE Account Owner Etienne, contributes to the IL ABLE Account to save for her son’s adult life. “I didn’t need to immediately focus on spending ABLE money around certain needs,” said Townsend in a recent interview with Chalkbeat, a nonprofit news organization covering stories about education. “I already had those needs met. As he gets older, he needs more things and different things.”
3 ABLE Act Provisions Made Permanent
Congress passed the ENABLE Act, and it was signed into law on July 4. The new law makes three ABLE account provisions permanent. These provisions were first approved in 2017 but were scheduled to expire at the end of 2025.
