Illinois Treasurer Travels Across the State to Promote Financial Programs

How IL ABLE Empowers People with Disabilities

Each October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month recognizes the skills, talents and contributions of people with disabilities in the workplace. It also provides an opportunity to share how an IL ABLE disability savings account can support employment, financial independence and long-term financial wellness.

Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs traveled across Illinois and joined a radio interview to meet with people with disabilities, highlight inclusive employment and share information about IL ABLE. The program helps eligible people with disabilities save and invest for qualified disability expenses while helping protect eligibility for certain means-tested public benefits.

Treasurer Frerichs Visits Open Door Rehabilitation Center at the Sandwich Fair

September 8 was a picture-perfect day when Treasurer Frerichs paid a visit to the Open Door Rehabilitation Center’s (ODRC) Lemon Shakeup stand at the Sandwich Fair. The Treasurer met with staff, volunteers, and clients of the disability services organization, some of whom own IL ABLE accounts. A favorite among clients, ODRC serves up delicious lemonade and pizza at the Sandwich Fair every year.

Illinois State Treasurer Declares the Special Olympics Illinois Winter Games Open!

Treasurer Frerichs paraded with athletes and spoke at the Opening Ceremonies. 

The Treasurer was on hand to kick off the Special Olympics Illinois Winter Games 2022! The games, which featured skiing and snowshoeing competitions, were held in beautiful, wintry Galena.

After a parade down historic Main Street, the Treasurer declared the games open and shared the many benefits of IL ABLE savings and investment accounts for SOILL athletes and all ABLE-eligible individuals. Some of those benefits are:

  • You can contribute up to $16,000 per year to this tax-free savings account – more if you work.
  • Contributions may be tax-deductible.
  • You can save for everyday and/or long-term expenses.
